Formed at Lonate Pozzolo on March 5th 1941 with Ju.87 “Stuka”, the 101st Squadron was immediately employed against Greece from Galatina and Tirana airfield. Transferred to Milo at the end of May 1941, the Squadron flew against Malta until December when, after the hand-over of its Ju.87 to other units it returned to Lonate-Pozzolo. Re-equipped whir CR.42 biplanes on March 1942, and shortly rebased to Gerbini for canvay-escort duties, the Squadron was transferred to North Africa, where it fought until December from the bases of Derma, Abar Nimeir and Misurata.

Having returned again to Lonate Pozzolo, at the first the squadron heads is southern Italy, operating from Crotone and Manduria airfield. After the September 8th armistice, the 101st Squadron fought against the Germans with RE.2001 and RE.2002 airplanes from the bases of Manduria,Galatina,Leverano and Nuova. Officially reduced to cadre strenght on June 1944, the Squadron continued to operate as before and was re-equipped with MC.202 on July 1944. At the end of the war the Squadron stayed at Galatina, receiving MC.205 on June1946, and was transferred during the summer of 1947 to Orio al Serio and then to Treviso, where it got Spitfire IX. Rebased at Vicenza at the end of 1949, the Squadron used P-47D until the summer of 1952 when it moved to Villafranca on F-84G. Transferred to Rimini on October 1956, the Squadron flew F-84F from January 1957 to January 1970 except for a spell from June 1965 when operated RF-104G after training period at Grosseto.
