The USS Theodore Roosevelt departed the port of Norfolk, Virginia, on September 8, 2008 for a planned medium-to-long-term mission in the Middle East region, in support of maritime security and power projection operations. The group (Carrier Strike Group 2) was also composed of units of Carrier Air Wing 8 (CVW-8) The aircraft carrier arrived in Cape Town, South Africa, on October 4, 2008, marking the first visit by an American aircraft carrier to that city since 1967; three days later he left for the Persian Gulf. He later operated as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, launching sorties in support of ISAF troops in Afghanistan.
